DIVINE DELIVERANCE

Proverbs 3:6

In all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths.

Last week we were reminded of victory in Europe, a time of rejoicing for many including those held captive in Nazi camps, there were many scenes of great joy and relief. I was touched and encouraged by the movie pictures in Britain and America of people in churches throughout on their knees thanking God for their deliverance.

Our own King George VI was known to be a godly man who gave thanks to God and it was President Truman in America who called for the day after VE Day to be a day of going to church and thanking God for the nations victory over Germany, to pray for an end to war with Japan and for guidance for the nation in a time of peace.

When reading testimonies of wartime leaders it’s interesting to note that many speak of divine intervention during various periods of great danger during world war two, For instance the short break in the extreme weather front that allowed the great build up for D-Day to go ahead and catch the enemy by surprise. Evan a Russian Military leader (who later became Soviet President of Russia) Nikita Khrushchev reintroduced the Lords prayer to his command. Then there are the individual accounts of men and women on the front line or home front, I was privileged to hear one such account one Sunday afternoon outside of Wells Cathedral, this man was a soldier in France and was caught up with his company behind enemy lines, Tom was known by his friends as a friend of God, he was a Christian. “Lets stick with Tom they said, He’s Gods friend” and they made it back to the Dunkirk beaches, then across the channel by ship to Britain Praise God.

Proverbs 3:6 is a proverb of Solomon, King David’s son. I’m sure it was known at the time by many in Israel, trouble is people easily forget God over periods of time, especially times of peace, Britain has gradually since WW2 become like that, a less believing in God nation. Many believe that God and religion has been replaced by science and yet science explains things that are known and tries to investigate the unknown. An emanate scientist who is well known stated on national TV that to say in the Pandemic “we are following science” is an error, often some people today quote Darwin’s theories in opposition to Christianity yet they deliberately ignore the fact (if they ever knew it) that Darwin bitterly regretted that people turned his theories into a religion. There is plenty of evidence that in later years Charles Darwin turned to Christ, we have testimony to the fact, and that his favourite book in the Bible was the letter to the Hebrews which is full of the position of Christ and the New Covenant, salvation through faith saved by grace, unmerited favour. Britain used to be known as a Christian nation Hebrew 6:4-5 “for it is impossible for those who were once enlightened and tasted the heavenly gift and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come. V6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the son of God and put him to an open shame” fortunately God is merciful, knows the heart, and the prodigals often return to the fold Isaiah 55:7

Our nation and the whole world are vulnerable to a virus and thousands upon thousands are dying throughout the world and the need to follow our verse would be good advice for all world leaders who are there for the good of their people. By acknowledging God we honour our maker and he is there to guide nations and individuals to greener pastures.

1 Chronicles 16:1 says “seek the lord and his strength, seek his face evermore” “and in V12 “remember his marvellous works which he has done” in a way that’s what many have done, including children, unwittingly they have put signs of the rainbow in their windows, many are painted by children they chose the rainbow as a sign of hope. The rainbow in scripture is such a sign, it is a wise choice. God is merciful and I believe by faith that we will by the grace of God come through this testing period, when we do let us do as the writer of Proverbs instructed and President Truman encouraged, acknowledge God by going down on our knees and thanking him for our deliverance.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you
